University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB)originated from a regrouping the best departments in related areas from 5 eminent universities in 1952 as the result of nationwide higher education system reorganization, it has developed into one of influential National Key universities with main focus in engineering, while keeping a balance of science, management, humanities, economics, and legal study.

USTB is among the limited number of universities in China being authorized to establish graduate schools. It has been supervised directly by the Ministry of Education since 1998, and was one of the first groups of universities entering into ˇ°211 Projectˇ±, a central government program to built 100 top-ranking universities in the 21st century.

. At present USTB comprise 9 schools. Among its 2,631 teaching and administrative staff, there are 1,139 teachers, including 7 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and 3 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering. With a total enrollment of 30,000 students, it provides 40 undergraduate programs, 67 master programs, 27 doctoral programs, and 7 postdoctoral research areas. Besides seven state key disciplines in the fields of metallurgy, material science and engineering, mechanical engineering and mining, USTB also hosts 2 national key laboratories, a national engineering research center and 5 ministry central open laboratories

On scientific research, USTB has specific strength of solving technological problems in modern of metallurgy and materials production, as well as developing new technologies in these and other industries. Over 1,000 research projects have been awarded prizes at state, provincial or ministry level since 1978, more than 100 prizes were at the state level.

USTB is working hard now towards its strategy of becoming one of the top ranking research bases universities in China and an international renowned higher education institute with distinguished features. It will keep its current leading position in metallurgy and material sciences while making great efforts to advance in other areas, to achieve a balanced disciplinary structure of engineering and technology, science, management, economics, social science, humanities and legal studies in near future.
